[gui-talk] Downloading to NLS digital player

Sherri,

I have no idea what they mean by a "remote access." Sorry. No one ever told
me anything but what I learned to do, which is that I download a book into
its own folder on my hard drive (it consists of a dozen or more files, so
you need to keep it away from other such things). Then I plug an old thumb
drive into my USB port and copy those files onto it. Then I properly
disconnect the thumb drive from my computer (using the safely remove
hardware option on my system tray list (Insert F11) in Win XP Home. then I
plug the thumb drive into that port on the side of the player. Now the book
can be played using the player's controls.

One thing to beware: So far as I know, the player's firmware (own internal
programming) can't recognize different folders on a thumb drive. So you've
got to make sure there aren't any other NLS book files of any kind on the
thumb drive when you plug it into the player. They're supposed to update
that part of the firmware, and I think eventually someone's supposed to
start producing blank cartridges, which you'll then plug into your
computer's USB drive with a commonly used type of cord for transferring
files, and then you'll slip the cartridge you've just recorded onto into the
slot on the player. But both these things aren't happening yet. I mean
neither of them is happening. So for now, it's the thumb drive routine for
me.

What do you mean by this other method you mention? I wasn't aware you could
transfer files directly from your computer onto the player. I didn't know it
had memory in which it could hold a book and play it. Is this what's meant
by "remote access?" It wouldn't seem so, to me, but you never know with
these expressions.

would hhow, they're ethujb of tfold3er.Nowq the thumb drive

Hi Joel, They say in the instructions for the NLS digital player that
particular slot is to accommodate a remote access or something like that,
but I wondered if you could just plug a thumb drive in there and just
download to the player. I hadn't experimented with mine yet, because I also
have a Victor Reader Stream.
