One has to think about where one is going with support.  NVDA is interesting, but if one were going to put money into it what would be the desired result.  For one 
thing, if we and others are putting money into it, it really isn't free any longer is it?  When would we stop putting money into it?  The fact is that technology is 
constantly changing and the perfect screen reader can therefore never be built.  To keep a screen reader up to date even once it works well is going to take an on-
going stream of money, and a good free screen reader supported by the NFB and others simply leaves the rehabilitation agency and employers off the hook for 
providing some of the support for accessibility we need.  If we have a specific thing we'd like to see happen with NVDA or other open source screen reader, such as 
seeing if a particular approach to a problem is workable, then putting some money toward making that happen as a proof of concept for example would make sense 
to me.
