So a card reader is something all my sighted digital camera friends are 
familiar with? No big deal? I mean not esoteric? Okay.

Essentially you are right, a card reader connects to your PC, and
provides connections to other devices.  They are not thumb drives
though.  they are different sized memory cards, physically
different.  It provides physical connections to connect memory cards
to your computer which normally doesn't have connections for
them.  It is basically an adapter.
