[gui-talk] update re XP SP3installation failure

Andy,
I understand. But in my case, I use a hardware router and it's never
interfered with any sort of online communication or transaction. I just went
to Microsoft online and ran a search for this issue (service pack 3 access
denied) and I see that in the Forums there are long threads with a lot of
people discussing this issue. That's fascinating. But then I found that I
would need to register and sign in and could not figure out how to do this,
except one item in an FAQ about the procedure reveals that there's a visual
CAPTCHA you have to get past in order to submit your info, and I'm not
going to muck about with Jaws and forms fields for an hour only to get
stopped by the CAPTCHA. Maybe there's an audio alternative once you get
there, but if no one can assure me of that, I'm not about to waste my time.
I can have a friend do the sign up for me.
Well, this is fun. Glad everyone says SP3 isn't urgent!

It could also be a firewall issue. in fact, this could be the case in
Joel's situation, because he said that the program downloaded, and the
problem came when the install started. Perhaps the setup has to
communicate with a site via the Internet, and the firewall is blocking
the outbound traffic. I have Norton, and when this occurs, Norton pops
up a dialogue asking me if I wish to allow it. I then click on the
"Yes" button, and the install proceeds.

Hi Doug,
Hi,
Thanks. No, I always exit all running apps when doing something like
this.
People on other lists have suggested maybe I should also shut down my
antivirus program AVG Free Edition V. 7.5 because it could be preventing
something from coming through or being installed. But no one seems to
know exactly what they mean by this, plus I don't know how to actually
"turn off"
AVG except by uninstalling it. If someone knows how to do this, I'd be
willing to try it.
Others say that even though I ran a virus scan just a couple of days
ago, and keep up with all my anti spyware protection, too, maybe there's
a virus or spyware interfering. Honestly, these are the same suggestions
that seem to come up whenever someone has certain kinds of problems. Oh,
also deleting temp files and, well, you get it.
Sorry, just a little frustrated. Anyway, not to worry. I definitely am
not trying to do something major like download and install SP3 while
I've got software like Word running.

Make sure you don't have any programs, including system tray icons, open
and running when you do the update, unless you really need them.
For example, make sure Word is shut down. I ran the SP3 update last
night with no problems and even ran Skype while doing it, and of course
IE7 since IE7 is what launched the whole thing... but I shut everything
else in the task tray down first. "Access denied" can occur when a
program is running and holds a lock on a file that needs to be updated.

It's unstoppable, like the Terminator. This morning, I got a notice
saying new updates were ready and inviting me to download and install
them. The clickable balloon that must have carried this message for a
few seconds went silent and must have evaporated, but I found the icon
for the same action on my system trray list. I figured maybe it's
something else besides the service pack. After all, people have been
saying that SP3 won't be offered as an automatic download until June.
But when I clicked on the button to accept the download in Express mode,
I got the same screen with terms and conditions I had to agree to a I
remember from yesterday, and then a screen comes up letting me know it's
SP3 I'm about to start downloading.
Oh, no! I didn't want to go through all that again, an hour or more of
downloading and installing only to be confronted with this dramatic,
bonging Windows error message again about access denied. So I canceled
out.
Ack. I need someone to explain what the failure message I got yesterday
meant by Access Denied that forced me to use the uninstall Wizard or
whatever it's called to undo the partial install, and whether this is
something I can remedy myself.
