[gui-talk] Is the jig suddenly up for AVG Free Edition 7.5?

I uninstalled 8 and re-installed 7.5. Works fine.

In other words, you have downloaded and installed Version 8 but, for some
reason, it doesn't actually function, but allows version 7.5 to go on
working instead? I've never heard of something like this. Most applications,
if I download and install a new version, it either uninstalls or overwrites
it. Know what I mean? Am I misunderstanding something?
Thanks.

No, 7.5 continues to update and run anyway.

You mean you downloaded and installed Version 8 just as you were asked to,
and yet what's running on your PC is still Version 7.5? that sounds unusual
to me. Thanks.

Hi Don,
I thought I said that I *had* clicked on the notice and opened the web
page. But I didn't do the download. Don, you see, the notice on the Web page
says that Version 7.5 is obsolete now, and that you must download Version 8.
I understand that, you see. Please be aware that what I am saying is that
Version 8 is said not to be operable with Jaws by many users. And I have
seen list posts containing acknowledgement of this from AVG with a promise
that they're working on it.
So no, if I were to do this download, it would replace 7.5, which *is* Jaws
accessible. Maybe you aren't a Jaws user so this wasn't clear? That is the
issue. Or maybe my post was not clear? Did I mislead you into thinking that
I was completely confused because Jaws wouldn't speak the pop-up dialogue? I
did not mean to make it seem that I was stuck there. I was only
*complaining* that the pop-up was not legible using Jaws, so you had to
click twice because that's all Jaws would tell you, and hope that whatever
happened then wouldn't be irreversible or nuclear. If so, I'm sorry and I
hope this post is. thank you.

You hit enter twice. It'll open up the web page to download the update.
Then just exit the web page without doing anything. It'll still do what it
should in 7.5.

There's been some discussion about what would make a good replacement for
AVG Free Edition Version 7.5 so long as the new version 8 is not yet screen
reader accessible lately. Avast! sounded pretty good to me, but I was hoping
I wouldn't have to switch and spend time learning to set it up and run it.
Well, the time may have come. This morning, AVG plunked some sort of
dialogue on my screen. Jaws wouldn't read the contents of the dialogue
except to say, when I pressed Insert B, that Insert B would reveal that I
was to press Enter twice to close it. I played with the Jaws cursor to no
avail. Blank, blank, blank, blank.
So I hit Enter twice, even though Insert E wouldn't identify the active
control, and a Web page opened urging me to either upgrade to the paid
Version 8 Security Suite or at least install the new free version 8
antivirus program.
yet only a few minutes before this happened, my AVG 7.5 faithfully performed
its usual morning update on itself, same as ever. There was no mention on
the Web page when 7.5 would actually expire, and if there was such a notice
in that pop-up dialogue, Jaws couldn't find it or anything else.
Anybody know? Is this the end for AVG Free Edition Version 7.5? I was hoping
the AVG people (I see they no longer go by the Grisoft name) would fix up
the interface of Version 8 so it was Jaws accessible before 7.5 expired.
Sigh.
