Hello Andrew,
I assume you are referring to the Information Access Committee? The results
have still been less than a drop in the bucket. No offense intended toward
the appropriate portions of either organization, but, alas, what we're doing
makes a splash once in a great while, but that does not by any means
represent a serious, ongoing accessibility evangelism effort. :-(

The ACB has an environmental access committee.

Hello Andy,
Do either of the consumer organizations have an organized, systematic
process and team to deal specifically with accessibility advocacy
matters?
Once in awhile, ACB or NFB enters into a structured settlement with a
company or files a lawsuit but, other than that, it seems these efforts
are little more than a drop in the bucket. It seems to me that there
are many things we can do to try and work with people short of full on
litigation or threats of same.

Perhaps a good place to start would be with the consumer organizations
of the blind. They could pass resolutions, and establish working groups
that could make contact with the publisher and enter into a process of
structured negotiation, similar to what was done to give us access to
bank ATM's and web sites.

Thank you Andy for your valuable input. I really appreciate your
thoughts on the accessibility matter, as you probably know more about
both 504 and 508 than I do. I wonder if we could see how many
transcription schools require Stedman's?

This is a shame, because Stedman's products have always been accessible
in the past. The NFB has had success doing structured negotiations in
the past. If they have invested big bucks in using this protocol or
software, it may take someone with technical expertise with both
publishing software, and access technology to provide them with
technical assistance. I don't know about the legal obligations that the
publisher would have, but certainly, any school, especially a publically
funded school, that uses this material in its present state would be in
violation of Sec. 504, and Sec. 508 if it is a government entity.

Hello Sherri,
They are quite likely in violation of at least Section 504 of the
Federal Rehabilitation Act, but I think we should start by asking them
to do the right thing before resorting to beating them over the head
with noncompliance to legislation. We should determine the following:
1. What makes it inaccessible now?
2. How could it be made accessible?
3. Why should the effort be made?
Alas, I am not involved with medical transcription, so I don't have any
clue who to contact, but I am certainly willing to assist with any
advocacy if anyone knowledgeable would like to work with the journal.
Thanks.

toscreen reading software
Hello list,
I got word from the person who
teaches the transcription course for blind people out of Daytona that
the Stedman's word books for 2008 are now using bookshelf, which has
been used in the Quick Look Electronic Drug Reference for the last
couple of years. I am extremely concerned about this and feel we should
let them know that this will not work for blind people using
screen-reading software and that they need to provide accessible copies
of their books for us. Does anyone know who I can contact?
Are they in any sort of violation of the ADA by producing their
electronic books in a format we cannot use? Any help would be
appreciated.
