Jennifer did you try a different tape?  Sometimes it is the particular part
of the tape and not the player.

Hi list,

I'm having a problem with this unit. I'm not sure if this is the right list 
for it, but here it goes. It was playing fine, but now when I try listening 
to sides one or two, it very muffled-to the point where I can't here 
anything at all except for a very faint voice. When I switch the side 
selector switch, sides three and four play fine, but of course this does me 
no good if I haven't listened to sides one and two first. I just tried 
cleaning it with a cotton ball and alcohol, but it seems worse. Now the 
regular speed is not playing right. Anyway, does anyone know of anything I 
can do to fix this or do I need to call the 800 number mentioned on the 
tape. I didn't get a warrantee when I bought this not even a year ago, so 
that won't help me.
