[gui-talk] AVG interfering with Open Book scans?

I've got a longstanding problem with Open Book often hanging midway into a
scanning project, a situation from which it's impossible to escape by simply
pressing Escape to end the process, so I've had to resort to all sorts of
tricks including using the Windows Task Manager dialogue to shut down OB, or
even restarting my computer if that fails. Not to mention that often leaves
me with a partially completed scanning project to rescue somehow. This is a
major pain.

I'm using OB 7 (until FS finally ships OB 8), under Win XP Home, SP2. And
here's what someone on the Open Book list told me in no uncertain terms was
the cause of my problem: AVG trying to scan the temp files that Open Book is
creating, and somehow, in the process, hooking something in OB that makes it
hang. And the progress sound just goes on, and on, and on, as if OB still is
planning to do the final step in getting text onto my screen. Not true, of
course.

anyway, this OB lister says she gave up AVG and switched to, let's see, I
guess it was Nod 32, and Open Book finally began to work properly. Now, I'm
used to AVG, and haven't had virus issues since I began using it a few years
ago, although I may owe some of that safety to my hardware router. But I'll
migrate to another Jaws friendly antivirus program if I must, although I
guess there aren't any other freebies out there besides AVG.

But first, before I ask for recommendations, I'd like to know if the above
makes sense to anyone knowledgeable about this sort of issue. Could AVG
actually cause Open Book to hang? It doesn't do anything to Word, OE or
anything else. Also, please understand I'm not complaining about being
slowed down by the actual full scan, or being interrupted when AVG displays
notification that it's downloading and installing a definitions update. I'm
fine with all that. I'm talking about AVG running real time scanning on the
new temp files Open Book is creating, or something like that. This is how
people explained it to me, though I know nothing about this.

Any observations? I'd really like to get Open Book working dependably for a
change so I could set about scanning an entire book now and then without
being afraid it would get screwed up after 10 or 20 pages and I'd have
wasted my time and everything.

Thanks. I'm a reasonably experienced user of Open Book, whatever good that
is in this situation. No need to start from the beginning. I mean, I know
the OB menus and settings and that sort of thing.
