Does anyone in the blind access tech community have any idea whether this
service pack will affect Jaws and other screen reader accessibility
negatively?
thanks.

Microsoft Finalizes Windows XP SP3

Paul Thurrott, news editor, thurrott at windowsitpro.com

Microsoft announced yesterday the completion of Windows XP SP3, the
final service pack for the aging and soon-to-be-discontinued desktop OS.
XP SP3 will
make its way to PC makers and Microsoft's enterprise customers in the
coming weeks, the software giant says. Individuals who want to download
the update
can do so beginning April 29.

"We are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 has released to
manufacturing (RTM)," wrote Chris Keroack, the release manager for XP
SP3, in a
posting to Microsoft's TechNet site. Keroack also spelled out a rough
release schedule for the service pack, which begins with the April 29
manual download
availability and ends with an "early summer" broad release via Windows
Update. A separate Microsoft post, since removed, placed automatic
availability
via Windows Update on June 10, however.

Here's the complete XP SP3 release schedule:
RTM (release to manufacturing): April 21
OEM channel: April 21
Windows Update (optional update): April 29
Microsoft Download Center: April 29
MSDN/TechNet download: May 2
Windows XP SP3 fulfillment media (CD-based): May 19
Volume license customers download: June 1
Windows Update/Automatic Updates: June 10

screenshots on the SuperSite for Windows.

Microsoft Ends Hotmail Support in Outlook Express

Microsoft has begun alerting Outlook Express users that it will no
longer support accessing the Hotmail Web-based email service from the
application. Instead,
the company is directing users to its free Windows Live Mail
application, which offers substantial functional and security
improvements over Outlook Express
as well.

"As of June 30, 2008, you will no longer be able to access your Hotmail
inbox via Outlook Express," an email letter to Outlook Express users
reads. The
letter goes on to explain that Outlook Express accesses Hotmail via a
legacy technology called Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol
(DAV), which
is not efficient enough to meet the demands of today's multigigabyte
inboxes. Microsoft is replacing DAV with a newer technology called
DeltaSynch, which
is not Outlook Express compatible.

Outlook Express users worried about the shift should understand that
Windows Live Mail is a true superset of that earlier email application.
Microsoft replaced
Outlook Express with Windows Mail in 2006 with the release of Windows
Vista, but Windows Live Mail, available as a free download, is a
functional replacement
of both Outlook Express and Windows Mail. (Microsoft Outlook users can
continue to access Hotmail/MSN email via the free Outlook Connector
software.)

Windows Live Mail provides several useful features in addition to
Hotmail Web mail support: It can be configured with multiple email
accounts (Hotmail/MSN,
POP3, IMAP), offers rich Photo Mail functionality, includes Vista-like
Instant Search and security features (including antivirus scanning,
antiphishing,
and antispam), supports RSS feed aggregation, and integrates with a
variety of other Windows Live products and services. You can find out
more about Windows
Live Mail from the Windows Live Web site.
