Em and En are printer's measures and indicate how long the dash is.
When I was much smaller, we distinguished between them by calling some
"dashes" and some "hyphens," but now I'm hearing things like em-dash
just as often.  I've never spent the time to remember which is which,
but they really do have different uses--for instance, I just used a
long one, though I typed a double "dash" character to do it since I'm
writing in plain text.  You use a different mark to split a hyphenated
word than to split a sentence as I just did.

What's the difference in meaning between the two characters?  I don't 
remember seeing anything about it in school in the 50's and 60's, and 
haven't heard any explanation of it since.  In fact, asking sighted folks I 
know they tell me they never use it and don't understand why some 
publications do.

I'd be interested to know.

I reiterate. Do you *really* want to remain in ignorance of the printed
characters you are working with? To me, that's like saying that you
don't care whether your characters are uppercase, bolded or italic.

  That's because it's an "em dash" character, not a regular dash
character. The Unicode character set includes several different
dash-like characters.  Here are some that I put in using the Character
Map tool.

  -       Regular Dash
  ?$B!>       Hyphen
  -       En (?$B!He n?$B!I) Dash
  -       Em (?$B!He m?$B!I) Dash
  ?$B!=       Horizontal Bar

  I?$B!Gd forgotten the meanings of En versus Em dashes and had to look it
up here:
