[gui-talk] Which Winamp 5.5 installation type to use?

Okay. I just went through that dialogue, letting the focus rest on one 
installation style at a time, then tabbing to the list of features and 
arrowing down it to see which ones were there, and which were checked or 
unchecked.

First of all, exactly the same six features are always showing in that list. 
It doesn't expand or contract at all as you switch among installation types.

Second, so far as I can determine, the only feature that loses its check 
mark as you go to lighter versions of the installation is Winamp Library. 
That starts out checked in Full,then becomes unchecked in the rest of the 
installation types. and that is the ONLY difference that shows up in this 
dialogue. So, I've got to infer that there are other differences that 
distinguish one installation type from the other, not only this (or else 
more of those listed features would become unchecked as you descend from 
Full to Standard to Lite).

So, to say I shouldn't hassle it is like saying nothing, in this case. There 
must certainly  be a difference between those installation types beyond this 
one feature being turned off when you move lower than the Full version. And 
that isn't explained anywhere that I'm aware of. Which means, well, you're 
just supposed to guess. This is very clear to me. I don't at all think I was 
being too demanding to wonder. I spent a period of my professional life 
writing just this sort of documentation, although for larger and more 
complex systems. And this is called bad instructional system design. Period. 
Apparently, nobody knows (unless they're all on the blind Winamp list, which 
I don't feel like messing with again), so everyone's supposed to just make a 
blind guess and choose one, and some say turn off Winamp
agent and others say that hasn't been important for Jaws users for a few 
years already and that Winamp agent performs a useful function, preventing 
other apps like WMP from usurping the file type associations you've 
carefully set in Winamp, without your being aware until it's too late that 
you're gonna have to go back into Winamp preferences, and maybe into WMP 
options as well, and reset things.

it's the wild, wild, west or something. Oh, well. I'm gonna go for the full 
installation, uncheck visualizations, though I don't see what harm they 
could do me if they're just like the same thing in WMP, like screen saver 
designs that move with the music.

Ack. I'll bet there's a real Winamp Help feature somewhere with books and 
topics, and if you read something in there *before* you install the program 
(though how, I can't guess) then you are taught what these different 
installation types are about. Talk about system design. I did find an online 
Winamp help function of some sort, but it's this page links didn't work and 
I couldn't make any sense of it. Oh, well. Onward.

Similar lists of features seem to appear no matter which installation type
you check. I have a feeling the difference may be something more than that.
But I'll go try it again and patiently check each type, in turn, and see
which features are shown. Needless to say, though I'm just the one who's
liable to say it, this is not very informative design for a dialogue like
this. I shouldn't have to be asking the way I am. Of course, back in the
days when you got programs at the store in boxes, they came with printed
manuals, from slender pamphlets for something like this (probably, I'm
guessing) to fat volumes of instruction for something like Word. But in the
first chapter, Installation, or maybe it would have been the second one
after a one-page thing about system requirements, you'd have been told in a
few paragraphs that the program can be installed in several configurations,
and here's the difference, and here's how to choose among them. So when you
got to the actual dialogue, you'd know exactly what was being presented to
you. God forbid they should waste their time with anything as human friendly
as that, anymore, which could be done online at a company Web site, too.
English. Sentences and paragraphs. Not bulleted lists and tables and search
edit fields. But so it goes, and I find myself asking these questions and
everyone just guessing, around and around  It's not our fault. We're not
being told what we need to know. It's real simple. Shoddy behavior on the
vendor's part.

But remember what I said. There are several installation types. Full,
standard, lite and something else. Now I think each of those brings up a
slightly different set of components, but I want to know which instillation
type to choose, and only then will I go to the next area and uncheck any
components that are still there but which you say I'm to get rid of.

First I want to know which type to choose, regardless of the second step.

While visualizations won't hurt they can't help.  You don't want to install
the Agent, Remote, and you want the classic skin.  The first check box will
have a check in it you can't remove because it's the player itself.  so, go
down the list from there and uncheck the items previously mentioned.

Hi,

I'm about to install  Winamp 5.5, an I don't know how, as a Jaws user, I'm
supposed to choose among the several different installation types. It seems
that each type associated with a certain range of features, which seem to
change as you change installation types. but I don't know which to include
as a Jaws user for maximum accessibility and functionality.

I did find my way to some Winamp help page on the Web, and found an
explanation of what "Visualizations" are, and they're just the same as
similar animated displays used in WMP to jazz up the look of the interface
while something's flaying, sort of like a variety of screen savers that jump
around to the music. Not something I care much about, and certainly not if
it distracts the Jaws focus in any way. But about the rest of the
capabilities listed for each installation type, I have no idea what to make
of that or how to just choose an installation type.
thanks to anyone who knows how to deal with this. I'm a Jaws 8x user, if I
didn't mention it.
