[gui-talk] Can't finish installing Winamp Remote

I also have CDex, and used to use it a lot. I just forgot to mention it. Oh,
the reason I don't use it anymore to rip tracks from my CDs to listen to on
my .mp3 player while working out is because I've gone deaf in my left ear
because of the benign tumor that I had to have treated on my vestibular
nerve group in the canal coming out from my inner ear. Fucked up my balance
big time, and left me without any useful hearing on that side. So I was
fortunate that Jukka, the Finnish guy who does Easy CD/DVD Extractor, was
happy to send me a sort of patch that added the capability to rip to mono in
the whole range of bit rates and stuff that you can do normally. Which mixed
the audio down to all play in one earbud, just like an early Beatles album.
I mean, the mono. So that's why I use that for ripping.

My article I posted? What article?

I'll look at this piece you sent.

Your choices of rippers and burners are some of the best in terms of
accessibility. Another accessible program is, Exact Audio copy, the techies
rave about it. A real easy to use ripping program is, CDEX. It's totally
keyboard driven. Come to think of it, I haven't learned where to book mark
tracks in Windows Media is. I've yet to read your article posts from the
weekend. I'm frantically trying to get these disks on to my drive and
listed on the web for Xmas sale time. I'm going to attach an unrelated
article to this post. I found it brought the curmudgeon in me.

Well, I always used to use WMP for my really simple audio needs. Which means
just playing individual music and podcast files (or .wmamusic files) and
streaming whatever might be online to sttream. So I have no idea how to do
anything with WMP or Real Player besides that stuff. And I just thought I'd
try Winamp again because it's so damn popular on the blind tech lists I
thought it must be exceptionally handy in some way. So, with your help, I've
learned its basic commands, plus the real advantage of being able to
bookmark (time mark, actually)a file and resume playing it later, something
I could never figure out how to do with the others.

Even for ripping and burning CDs and files, I have resorted to either Sonic
Record Now! or Easy CD'DVD Extractor because I found them easier to navigate
than the same functions on WMP and real Player even though I know those
capabilities are there in those apps.
But you're a power audio program user, so that's another story.

Here's something to chew on. with the newest version of jaws and Windows
Media Player 11, the only feature I can find which doesn't work is the
rewind. I've always used winamp but maybe not much longer.

I can understand that but since an install of that program can't take more
than a couple of minutes, you're lucky. Imagine if a similar problem had
developed with a Windows installation.

Okay. If that's the only way I can get it to stop bugging me, maybe I'll do
that. Thanks. I'm sure it's a wonderful feature for those who'd use it, but
I sure wish I hadn't tried to accept it during the install.

It has to do with sending music to others and other related stuff. If you'd
like, just uninstall the program, reboot, reinstall it and don't install the
remote. I had no problems with it but we're running different operating
systems and it's not necessary to do the kinds of thing you want.

But Albert, I've already succeeded in installing the new version. It allowed
the install to complete without that. But the thing just keeps coming up.
Wait a minute; could it be that the upgrade actually wasn't installed, as I
thought it was? I could swear it was, because after I escape that Remote
dialogue by way of the cancel button, I think the install concluded and
Winamp launched, ready to go. Let me launch it manually and check the
version:

myep. I just launched it and jaws announced it as Winamp 5.5. So I guess
this Remote dialogue is like an outer space creature that won't die. I'll
figure it out somehow. Now, if someone cares to tell me what Remote Access
is about, that will be educational, whether or not I wind up registering for
it.

Thanks.

solution! install without the remote feature. You can live quite happily
without it.

Hi,

What does that mean, practically speaking? You mean I'm going to have to put
up forever with this dialogue appearing every time I start my computer,
always resisting my attempts to take care of it? There's no "later," here. I
tried it when I installed, and I tried again just now when I booted up and
it got in my face. I don't expect this is going to change, so what you say I
don't understand. I can't do it now, and I won't be able to do it later,
unless I overcome this troublesome dialogue. I don't know how to bring it up
on purpose, so I'll try it next time I boot up and it presents itself again.

But it does not offer me a choice to say please don't show me this again. So
I'm gonna have to deal with it somehow. As I have no idea what it's for at
this time, that makes it doubly annoying.

While it's alright to install the remote, you don't have to do it now.

Subject: [gui-talk] Can't finish installing Winamp Remote

Hi,

I've recently download and installed the latest upgrade of Winamp, Version
5.5, and everything is almost in place except for this Winamp Remote option.

I'm not sure just what it's for, but Albert reassures me that it's fine to
include it in the installation.

Okay, so I have tried to accept it. But if anyone knows this drill, there's
a dialogue where you're supposed to submit log-in information (I guess this
has something to do with going online to obtain music files somewhere?). You
provide a User ID and a password, confirm the password, furnish an optional
email address, then click on a Finish button.

Well, I can't do that. The Finish button refuses to respond to either the
Enter key or the spacebar. Jaws doesn't say that pressing alt F is on option
here, but I tried it anyway and of course that didn't do anything. I also
tried switching to the Jaws cursor, finding the Finish button and left
clicking it. But no response to that, either.

Oddly, the Cancel button *does* respond, so I'm able to close the dialogue
after confirming that's what I mean to do. The confirmation keypress also
works, of course.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much.
