George,
I see Ray has given you the kind of directions you were asking for, and if
that takes care of things, fine. But I also wanted to mention that the audio
programs I'm familiar with, Windows Media Player and Real Player, both
provide settings right within their own Tools/Options menus for choosing
which file types for them to play. That's how I've accomplished what I think
is your intention, here. I don't know if this is more or less useful than
the Windows settings you're looking for, but just in case you aren't aware
that at least some of the audio programs incorporate this function.
And I confess that, although I've tried out Winamp, I've never learned to
really use it, nor do I remember whether it offers the same thing. If it
doesn't, of course, then the Windows approach would be your only way to go.
got the same kind of confesws although prorams hReakl ----- Original

go in to the explorer environment. Then, select your primary drive; which,
if you haven't renamed anything, should be local drive C. then, open this
drive. Do not select anything. Instead, go to folder options. File types
is in there some place.

Ray --
Isn't there a way within Windows to universally define certain filetypes to
be associated with certain programs? For instance, how would one redefine
that all MP3 files should be played with WinAmp, for example, and all .MID
files be played with another player?

Uh, do you have the latest version of Winamp? IF not, you'll need to get
it. Now, as for the file opening up in notepad, sounds to me like you need
to go in to your Winamp file types plug in and select to associate with .mp4
files. Next, you might want to find the file in the normal way, then right
click on the file. Then, from the context menu which opens up, choose the
"open with..." submenu. Once in this submenu, choose Winamp. That should
do it.
Sincerely yours,
The Constantly Barefooted,
Ray
