[gui-talk] One more try: Expanded/Collapsed out of control in OE

hi,
Was Mike's message actually a response to you? I saw the subject line, which
originally was mine, and didn't bother to look beneath his message because I
assumed he was just sending me a friendly message and saying I shouldn't let
things like my *own* problem, now solved, bother me. So that is what I was
replying to. Perhaps by mistake? Maybe you had stepped into the thread
without changing the subject line? If so, sorry. And yes, Jaws 8 seems to
have a lot of glitches, different for nearly everyone, and I've had periods
where I've just given up and gone back to using Jaws 7.0, though I've
returned to version 8 when FS tech support helped me fix whatever was
bothering me. By the way, 7.1 was the last update of Version 7 before they
released Version 8. Or at least I never heard about a 7.2. Check your
Help/about Jaws just to check.
Again, I wasn't addressing you nor certainly making light of your annoyance
with that problem you describe having. Sorry.

Well, I'm still having issues with JAWS not reading the expanded and
collapsed messages in the right place. I can't think of any other things to
change, and if I use another, earlier version of JAWS, it reads them
correctly. So, I conclude it must be a JAWS 8 issue.

Mike,
Thanks to Sherri's urging, I took a look at the setting-- which I have
never, ever touched-- and found it changed to sort by conversation. I'm
certain Jaws didn't do this. How could it have? That's a rhetorical
question, of course. And of course at that point I changed it back to sort
by date received or however that's phrased in the menu, and now all's well.
And of course I went on from there. I'm not moping about, rereading
Kierkegaard and tossing Chinese coins for the I Ching to try to figure out
the meaning behind this. So all is well.

I've seen some occasions where mhy "sort by" option changed
mysteriously; I don't know if I hit a bum key or if there's some problem
with JAWS or OE. I just fix it and go on.

aha! What a crazy menu. Well, you're right. This was the setting that
counts. And you know something? I had never, ever touched this
setting, and
it's checked. Or it was. I unchecked it. Let's see how long it remains
unchecked. unch

It isn't in the view area that says group messages by conversation; it
is in
the "current views". It's not in the sort by area either. Try the
"current
views" and see what's checked. Good luck!

Sherri,
I'm sorry, but as I told Scott, what's checked in that list is still
what's
always been checked. I checked it anyway, in case it had gotten
changed
without my realizing it. but no, it's still Order by date received.
I've
never set it to arrange the messages by thread. See? Something's
really
wrong. I knew it.
thanks a lot.

y Joel, As usual, once I looked around for about 20 minutes, I found
out it
is very easy, though I don't know how to toggle this feature on and
off.
1. In Outlook Express outside a message go to view.
2. On current views, press enter.
3. Arrow down to group messages by conversation and make sure that is
unchecked.
4. Tab to okay and press enter. That should do it.

Hi,
As no one has yet responded to my inquiry on this issue, let me ask
once
more in hopes of attracting helpful attention to my plight.
All of a sudden, messages in my Outlook express folders have begun to
announce themselves as expanded or collapsed. I suppose it affects
just
emails that share a subject line, not only from mailing list threads
but
just from private correspondence.
Well, I didn't set anything to mark my messages in this way. And the
only
controls I know of that relate to this are on the View menu, where you
can
choose expanded or collapsed. Which certainly does change the
announced
status of affected messages, now that some of them are marked this
way. But
what do you do to turn the whole damn thing off? I thought I knew the
OE
interface pretty well by now, but this has taken me by surprise. And,
unaccustomed as I am to dealing with messages marked expanded or
collapsed,
I've had the unpleasant experience of accidentally deleting and
double-deleting messages from a thread besides the specific one I
really
wanted to toss. This led to a lot of extra work yesterday in some
professional correspondence. Not fun. Had to recreate all sorts of
incoming
and outgoing messages. Too much to explain.
Now, I can only think of two ways this stuff could have begun
happening. One
is that I may at some point have hit the wrong keystroke or hotkey
combination and toggled this deal on without knowing it; I'm sure I'm
not
the only keyboarder who's made such a blunder now and then and been
mystified by the result, and had not idea how to undo the mistake. Or
I
guess it could be some sort of file corruption? But for me, Outlook
express
has been stable and dependable to the max, so I can't imagine how this
could
have happened.
Anyway, I could swear I remember a discussion about expanded and
collapsed
threads coming up before on the GUI-Talk list, about how to set up the
function and control it? the only other major tech support list I'm on
is a
Jaws-related JFW list, and there I'm sure one of the many hall monitor
prigs
would immediately have posted something sanctimonious about how unless
I
were to say that I felt Jaws was at fault, my question was egregiously
off
topic and I ought to be moderated. There's this little hard core of
cyber-itinerant control freaks there whom I've seen pop up on several
other
lists over time, always trying to do the actual mod's job for him or
her. So
it couldn't have been there.
sorry to vent. But that stuff just gets to me, sometimes. Any ideas
about
this unwelcome collapse/expand thing?
thanks.
