Dave,
I see now. It's the kind of thing Chuck's saying has to be decoded by a 
function in Office/word or, as I have herd about, in Open Book. Thanks. Boy, 
do they throw a scare into you when Jaws yells Warning! Empty document! Why 
"warning?"

Joel,  It is saying empty document because there is no text per se in
it.  The document is most likely an image, it could be a scan of a
page or document, that hasn't been run through OCR.  The creator
takes the image and places that in the PDF document.

Some OCR programs can take this kind of PDF and extract the text for you.
