Nick,
thanks for the description. While Hal sounds very spiffy in a lot of ways,
which you explain very vividly, it also sounds as if those very advantages
are ones that wouldn't matter a whit to me in regard to my basic
Windows/word/IE/OE needs on a single, home computer.

So I don't have to kick myself for just having forked over some more money
for another Jaws SMA, even as I prepare a horribly long list of glitches and
really inconvenient stuff that my new Jaws 8 does, worse out of the starting
gate than any earlier Jaws version I've used. But that's way off topic, and
too much to go into anyway.

I love Hal because it doesn't slow down my network functioning, and, it
allows me to investigate and use the actual screen layout, unless I tell it
specifically
to make it an easier to navigate list view. But for working with sighted
colleatgues and/or tech support personnel it is grand. Also, it has a
plethora of ways
you can indicate message, keyboard, and review voices and much much more.
They were the first to allow Push technology, so any seat on a network
with a sound card can become the adaptive workstation, and, they've got
great braille display and external speech synthesizer support. There is
much
screen configuration, and even preparation of screen maps which requires
much less end-user expertise to develop than some other available methods of
developing configurations for programs, and generally, I can get much useful
insight into how a new application works, with the out of the box settings.
I'm
no expert in the use of the program, tending to see my screen readers as a
necessary means of accessing the application I want to be running, but
except
for the dirth of US trainers and support, really enjoy using it... And, I
find the method of linking commands between primary visual or auditory
output easy to
use if working SuperNova with a partially sighted person easy and intuitive
because it's the same command structure, except the subordinate one uses
"shift", if memory serves... (grin) And, they don't penalize the user who
must user different operating systems at home and school or work with a
pricing
structure which penalizes the working or accademic user using say, xp pro,
Windows 2000, or the corporate flavor of Vista.

Screen Readers: Hal Speech, SuperNova speech and screen enhancement/most
people think of that is merely large print, and the last one, who's name I
 can't remember, Screen Enhancement...

Would anyone like to tell me what these products are? I happen not to know
what Dolphin makes and sells, and after patiently traversing what must
have
been three screens' worth of copy and still not hearing what I should have
heard in the lead paragraph, a mention of what these products are, I am
giving up and going on to check the rest of my morning's first email. I
think these people need a new corporate communications department. Again,
sorry if whatever they make is dearly beloved by folks more knowledgeable
about the adaptive tech market than I am. But really, now.

Dolphin's VISTA Commitment to their Customers
  29-Jan-2007

Dolphin customers have long valued the Dolphin ethos that users
  should have access
to the same first-rate functionality available at the same affordable
  price, irrespective
of which Windows operating system their PC has installed. This
  certainly holds true,
as Dolphin announces its Vista support in the form of version 8.01.

It's Simple - One price, support for all 5 Vista Editions.

Supernova, Hal, LunarPlus and Lunar version 8.01 will offer the same
  excellent functionality
as version 7.03, but will introduce support for the Home Basic, Home
  Premium, Business,
Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Vista, as well as continuing to
  support Windows
  XP Home and XP Professional.

"Why should visually impaired people continually have to compromise?
  Our users want
their favourite Dolphin software to access all of the new Vista
  editions" explains
Hazel Shaw, Group Marketing Manager for Dolphin. "Following 12 months
  of extensive
Vista beta testing for Microsoft, V8.01 will offer this no compromise
  solution."
  Dolphin's Vista Guarantee

  Scheduled for early 2nd
quarter of 2007, v8.01 demonstrates Dolphin's commitment to
  ensuring that visually
impaired people retain their right to choice.

"Customers who purchase their Dolphin product after the official
  release of MS Vista
will be entitled to a free upgrade to v8.01. Version 8.01 will also
  be localised
immediately and available in all the current version 7 languages."

"Existing version 7 customers can also upgrade free of charge should
  they decide
to upgrade their PC to one of the five Vista editions. Similarly
  version 7 users
that decide against upgrading to Vista will not be charged more for
  not moving to
v8.01 when future upgrades become available. Our primary goal is to
  maintain our
  user's choice"

Dolphin requests that new Dolphin customers, purchasing after the
  official release
of Vista, and existing version 7 customers that decide to upgrade
  their PCs to Vista,
should register their interest with their local Dolphin dealer or
  alternatively by
  emailing info at dolphinuk.co.uk.

  Terms & Conditions

The free upgrade to v8.01 will be available for download only from
  the Dolphin website.
Please be aware that the file size will be relatively large and a
  reasonable Internet
  connection speed will be required.

The free upgrade will only be available for 60 days after the
  official release of
  v8.01.

After the 60 days the upgrade will become chargeable at the normal
  upgrade price
for the Dolphin product. Visit the Dolphin website for upgrade price
  details.

The free upgrade is restricted to registered Dolphin users with
  v7.01, v7.02 & 7.03
  serial numbers.

V8.01 will not include additional functionality and is therefore only
  suitable for
customers moving to the Vista operating system.

V7 customers that do not upgrade their operating system to Vista and
  therefore do
not move to v8.01 will NOT be penalised financially when purchasing
  future upgrades.
Dolphin and Dolphin's local agents can not accept responsibility for
  email notification
of the release of version 8.01 not reaching the customer due to spam
  filters and
  other problems.

Pen customers should note there may be a nominal charge to cover post
  and packaging
  costs.
