[gui-talk] Olympus recorders

To be really honest, I don't think any Minidisc player I've ever used
i'd call truly accessible in the sense of accessability if that makes
any sense however the model I have currently, the MZN109 which is now
quite outdated can be "gotten around" if you know the number of
clicks of the wheel etc. I've already said that I had someone go
through the menu system with me whilst I took notes, I'm very glad to
see that sony puts menu charts in the back of their manuals which
show the order of menus and sub-menus in the system so once I had
that info it was just a case of trying to remember what I needed to
know <smile>.
I'm going to get the new HI MD from Sony shortly, hope luck holds in
my bank account <smile>.
Believe it or not, I still think there is a good place for Minidisc
particularly with the new high capacity Md'S available now which hold
a gig of data etc, not to mention the fact that you can edit
independently of a PC or Mac with software.

What can you recommend for a mini disk recorder which has good

Ok, well let's get one thing perfectly clear, just because I don't
think something is suitable for me doesn't mean that I'm telling
people they shouldn't use it themselves, if the Olympus recorder
sounds the sort of thing you'll want to use then fine! use it to your
hearts content, the point I'm making here is that it wouldn't suit me
as I believe it has some critical limitations and problems and for
the price I believe you should be getting a little more. I've already
expressed my disappointment at the level of audio hiss present in
some of the recordings I've now heard, for a digital recorder this is
not good and there is no excuse for that.
I expressed disappointment that the unit has no line in or out jacks
however I can see where Olympus is coming from here, I guess with
something designed mainly for dictation purposes which this machine
is, then such things as line in and out are not worth considering.
Finally my greatest annoyance would be that the memory cannot be
expanded, swapped etc, that's worse than a conventional cassette
recorder and a bad flaw.
So I guess the question has to be asked, are people prepared to pay
this sort of money for something which on the whole, isn't really
anything in my view to write home about? Are people willing to pay
all this money just for a voice guidance system?? I'm certainly not
but that's just me. I'm after the new Minidisc machine as this sort
of device will suit me better. It will handle dictation easily thanks
to its feeld microphone or any other external microphones you may
care to use. You can edit your notes or your audio recordings "on the
fly", that's more than can be said for my Iriver and the lack of
editing facilities is a huge disappointment for me on that machine
but this topic is probably for another post.
I can record audio to my hearts content thanks to the analog/digital
line input and output.
Yes, the minidisc recorder doesn't have a voice guideance system that
I grant you however I have 2 minidisc machines here, both of which
I've been able to access many of the functions of including the
editing functions, by having someone read parts of the manual to me,
taking notes and having someone go through the menus of my machines
whilst I write so taking this into account, I'd rather something with
functionality over voice guidance systems etc, they're nice but
they're not the only thing which makes a good product.
