[gui-talk] Olympus recorders

I already have a book for minimal note taking and listening to most books
except for Windows copyrighted files and I'll wait for the real thing.
However, I hope others find the need to purchase this machine to encourage
other developers to continue the good work that's been done at Olympus.

| Ok, well let's get one thing perfectly clear, just because I don't
| think something is suitable for me doesn't mean that I'm telling
| people they shouldn't use it themselves, if the Olympus recorder
| sounds the sort of thing you'll want to use then fine! use it to your
| hearts content, the point I'm making here is that it wouldn't suit me
| as I believe it has some critical limitations and problems and for
| the price I believe you should be getting a little more. I've already
| expressed my disappointment at the level of audio hiss present in
| some of the recordings I've now heard, for a digital recorder this is
| not good and there is no excuse for that.
| I expressed disappointment that the unit has no line in or out jacks
| however I can see where Olympus is coming from here, I guess with
| something designed mainly for dictation purposes which this machine
| is, then such things as line in and out are not worth considering.
| Finally my greatest annoyance would be that the memory cannot be
| expanded, swapped etc, that's worse than a conventional cassette
| recorder and a bad flaw.
| So I guess the question has to be asked, are people prepared to pay
| this sort of money for something which on the whole, isn't really
| anything in my view to write home about? Are people willing to pay
| all this money just for a voice guidance system?? I'm certainly not
| but that's just me. I'm after the new Minidisc machine as this sort
| of device will suit me better. It will handle dictation easily thanks
| to its feeld microphone or any other external microphones you may
| care to use. You can edit your notes or your audio recordings "on the
| fly", that's more than can be said for my Iriver and the lack of
| editing facilities is a huge disappointment for me on that machine
| but this topic is probably for another post.
| I can record audio to my hearts content thanks to the analog/digital
| line input and output.
| Yes, the minidisc recorder doesn't have a voice guideance system that
| I grant you however I have 2 minidisc machines here, both of which
| I've been able to access many of the functions of including the
| editing functions, by having someone read parts of the manual to me,
| taking notes and having someone go through the menus of my machines
| whilst I write so taking this into account, I'd rather something with
| functionality over voice guidance systems etc, they're nice but
| they're not the only thing which makes a good product.
