since the capacity of such drives is very high, I'd first consider to what
extent space is an issue.

Well, what do you mean by large capacity. USB powered devices are limited by
the amount of power it takes to make them work.  In the case of hard drives,
USB supplies enough power to spin a 2.5 inch disk.  The Western Digital
Passport is a line of USB powered hard drives.  I believe that the largest
they make is 250 GB. Generally, if you come across an external USB HD that
is a 2.5 inch disk, it can be USB powered.  All external hard drives that
use 3.5 inch disks must be powered by AC power, and these are generally the
ones that are 250 GB and larger.
