[gui-talk] external hard drive question

Mike, what do you mean about a device being powered by the hard drive if
it's plugged into the USB port? Is there something about the basics that I
don't know? For instance, when you plug something into a USB port, be it a
scanner or a printer, it's being powered by electricity generated by the
spinning of your computer's hard drive, the way the alternator of a running
car engine could power something? Or is it siphoning off some of the
electricity that's running the hard drive, to ill effect? Or do you mean
something entirely different than what I'm imagining, but this is the way
it's conventionally phrased even though someone like me may find it
misleading?
Thanks.

I suspect that powering a drive from the hard drive may be a bit much
for USB power connectionc.
