Hi Joel -- I just purchased one at the national convention and love it,
although it is a little pricy -- it is approx $2500 and there is a stand for
it sold separately if you want one, which is recommended if you are planning
on reading a lot of books and articles as you can leave the camera in the
stand and not worry about repositioning and guessing angle and distance.
If you care to have the ability to read any kind of printed material
anywhere and if the price doesn't scare you off, I highly recommend this
little unit. There is a competitor put out by Gorilla Inc that is a bit
bigger and newer and doesn't currently do as much in the way of scanning,
but it is a mini computer with USB ports that you can use to listen to mp3's
etc. Its price is about $100 more than the knfb reader.
Hope that helps. Recently the knfb was updated to scan light print on
darker background, which it didn't originally do. It has also been tuned
and updated to scan more and more common stuff. I have been amazed it
actually reads the labels off of bottles and cans and boxes quite completely
and accurately. And many people seem to use it for reading books, but I
haven't gotten into the book scanning yet.

Well, I went to that site, and the marketing text is interesting, what you
can read if you click on the link for the brochure. But there are no further
details about how it works or what it costs. Apparently, they don't want to
disclose any of that on the Web, and wish a potential customer to call in
order to be told more.
Am I correct? There is no more information available online than what I've
now seen?

Okay. That's food for thought. I'm certainly not going to go to my CD
collection, pluck out something arbitrarily, walk back across the room to

Yes it's hood to the computer by a long USB or PS2 cable. You can hold it
in your hand like a regular bar code reader but it also comes with a stand
for resting on your desk.

Wow, you mean the device isn't actually portable in the real sense? if
your
computer's in one room and your CD collection you've labeled with bar
codes
is in another room, you have to order some kind of long USB extension cord
so you can hold the scanner to your CDs, or take the CDs out of the case
and
go to the room with your computer to scan them? I know, of course if
that's
the case, you'd make sure the CDs were stored in the same room where you
have the computer. And you would have a cord that was, how long, I can't
guess.
But that's really weird. Not handy at all. I saw something like this
device
at the CSUN show once, and it was like a bloated TV remote, that's all.
Not
something that had to be connected to anything. Don't these devices use
flash memory or something, so they can be self contained?

It connects to the computer instead of being portable. I guess it's all
right to be connected to the computer if you're going to be using it for
small items like CD's or such. I got a demo of the software and it sounds
great. PS2 is that keyboard and mouse port.
