[gui-talk] One more try: hand held scanners

Hi Joel -- I just purchased one at the national convention and love it,
although it is a little pricy -- it is approx $2500 and there is a stand for
it sold separately if you want one, which is recommended if you are planning
on reading a lot of books and articles as you can leave the camera in the
stand and not worry about repositioning and guessing angle and distance.
If you care to have the ability to read any kind of printed material
anywhere and if the price doesn't scare you off, I highly recommend this
little unit. There is a competitor put out by Gorilla Inc that is a bit
bigger and newer and doesn't currently do as much in the way of scanning,
but it is a mini computer with USB ports that you can use to listen to mp3's
etc. Its price is about $100 more than the knfb reader.
Hope that helps. Recently the knfb was updated to scan light print on
darker background, which it didn't originally do. It has also been tuned
and updated to scan more and more common stuff. I have been amazed it
actually reads the labels off of bottles and cans and boxes quite completely
and accurately. And many people seem to use it for reading books, but I
haven't gotten into the book scanning yet.
If you want to discuss the knfb reader more you can subscribe to the
reader-users list on nfbnet.org
HTH!

Well, I went to that site, and the marketing text is interesting, what you
can read if you click on the link for the brochure. But there are no further
details about how it works or what it costs. Apparently, they don't want to
disclose any of that on the Web, and wish a potential customer to call in
order to be told more.
Am I correct? There is no more information available online than what I've
now seen?
thanks.

Does anyone else know where on the NFB site to find this device? I went to
the products and technology section. There is a list of links to
categories
of items-- audio devices, health gizmos, canes, etc.-- but no category
that
sounds right for a canner and reader.
So I went to the search function and tried KNFB Reader, because that's
what
Seville calls it below, but got no result. Tried just "reader," but
nothing.
Tried just KNFB, but nothing.
Can anyone help me with this search? Thanks a lot.

The knfb reader is good for reading cd labels. It is very portable, the
size
of the old brownie cameras.

Okay. That's food for thought. I'm certainly not going to go to my CD
collection, pluck out something arbitrarily, walk back across the room to
my
desk, and present the CD jewel box to the scanner. That would make no
sense
at all. This doesn't sound practical for my use. But I'll go to that site
and see what else they say about it.
Meantime, does anyone have another URL for information about other such
products? I know there are several of them. Does anyone remember their
names?

Hi,
Yes it's hood to the computer by a long USB or PS2 cable. You can hold it
in your hand like a regular bar code reader but it also comes with a stand
for resting on your desk.

Otis,
Wow, you mean the device isn't actually portable in the real sense? if
your
computer's in one room and your CD collection you've labeled with bar
codes
is in another room, you have to order some kind of long USB extension cord
so you can hold the scanner to your CDs, or take the CDs out of the case
and
go to the room with your computer to scan them? I know, of course if
that's
the case, you'd make sure the CDs were stored in the same room where you
have the computer. And you would have a cord that was, how long, I can't
guess.
But that's really weird. Not handy at all. I saw something like this
device
at the CSUN show once, and it was like a bloated TV remote, that's all.
Not
something that had to be connected to anything. Don't these devices use
flash memory or something, so they can be self contained?

Hi,
It connects to the computer instead of being portable. I guess it's all
right to be connected to the computer if you're going to be using it for
small items like CD's or such. I got a demo of the software and it sounds
great. PS2 is that keyboard and mouse port.

Otis,
Hi. A couple of questions. First, what is it you don't like about the USB
port connedtivity? Could you explain why, and what the better alternative
would be, in your opinion? And what is PS2? (Personally, I have USB ports
on
the back and the front of my PC, and things work fine like that. Printer,
flatbed scanner, .mp3 player, etc. So I don't know what you mean.
2. What are RS-232 or keyboard
wedge connection ? I never heard these terms.
Thanks very much.
Also,

Hi,
Check out Scan and Say at
http://www.barcode-solutions.com/scanandsay.html.
It's the cheapest bar code solution out right now. The only bad thing I
don't like about it is that it hooks up to your computer using a USB port
or
a PS2 port.
Scan and SayT includes:
Talking software for Windows with 5 different voice settings
Descriptions for approximately 500,000 grocery and retail items - easily
add
new
items yourself!
Supports UPC and EAN barcode standards.
500 pre-printed self-adhesive barcodes to use on items without barcodes
Multi-line scanner
Audio user manual (PDF version also included)
NO SCREEN READER SOFTWARE REQUIRED!!!
$395 PLUS $20 SHIPPING. Note: Specify USB (recommended), RS-232 or
keyboard
wedge connection when ordering.

Can anyone give me links to information about hand held scanners that
blind
people use to label items and identify them? As I've said a couple of
time,
I seem to remember these devices being discussed or at least referred to
her
on this list, and as I said, I want to look into them now as part of a
plan
to make my music CD collection accessible again.
Anybody remember what these devices are, who sells them, and where to
find
information, reviews or anything about them? And if no one still feels
like
piping up, would someone please tell me the name and subscription address
of
a mailing list where I might ask this sort of question and be responded
to?
I remember there's a list called Blind Tech, for instance. Would that
work?
How do you subscribe?
thanks.
