[gui-talk] Sending mail from multiple accounts in Outlook 2003:

Okay, Chuck. I believe you, too! :-) Thanks for emphasizing that OE and
Outlook can be different, however similar they may seem in their essentials.
I did try to learn to use Outlook once, a few years ago, but its extra
functions served only to confuse me, and I gave it up after a few days of
struggling. I didn't need anything that it did, really. But while I was
fooling around with it, I must have gotten the misimpression that it was
more similar in certain essential ways to OE than it actually is. So, I
stand corrected. and hope that Albert won't kill me for confusing the issue.

I believe you Joel, but you're using Outlook Express (OE) and I said that I
have not tried it under Outlook Express.

The original question was regarding Outlook 2003 (OL or OL2003) and the
From: field does not affect the account that is used. There is a separate
button for that.

It doesn't work that way for me. It works just as I say. If I subscribe to a
mailing list using this account, that's the account the postings from the
list go to; if I want, I can go to my Web mail online and find it right
there in the Inbox for that account, at least until it's downloaded to my
Outlook Express Inbox. Or if I subscribe to a mailing list under one of the
other accounts, mail from that list goes to *that* account's Inbox on the
Web before it comes into my OE Inbox. See? and it's all using the same
server at my ISP, just going to different addresses of mine, or coming from
them. This may be different from what you're talking about.

anyway, don't listen to me, It's all academic, for me. I don't have an
"issue," as they say.

I've always found the "From" functionality somewhat busted in Outlook (OL).
I've never used it in Outlook Express (OE) though.

In OL, all the "From" field does is set who the message is from, it does not
correspond to which account will be used to send the message. The account
determines which SMTP server will be connected, the username/password used,
etc. Each account sets the default "From" value (generally your name and
e-mail address), but the "From" field can be used to override that.

Just out of curiosity Chuck, as an OE 6 user, doesn't Outlook also enable
you to simply shift tab into the From field of the headers and find there a
combo box with all your accounts to choose from or, if you feel like typing,
you can just type in the return address you want to use? I ask because I
don't use any tool bar with OE, and it doesn't prevent me from doing this.
Know what I'm asking? Doesn't Outlook also work this way, if you prefer?
thanks.

As I mentioned, when you create a new message in Outlook 2003, initially it
will be configured to be sent from the default account.

If you wish to change the account that this message is sent from, there is
an Accounts button on the message toolbar which will allow you to choose
which account it should be sent from.

The accounts button will only be present on the message toolbar if you have
multiple accounts configured in Outlook.

Charles, my problem isn't with the default account I've selected but with my
ability to select a different account from which to send the message. It
seems it used to be that a list of options would come up somehow, and I'd be
able to arrowing and select which account to send from on the fly. Is this
true? I'm using Outlook 2003. thanks

Outlook will designate the first e-mail account setup as the default
account. You can change this from the Account Settings dialog. Go to the
Tools menu, choose Account Settings and then highlight one of the accounts
to be the default and press the "Set as default" button.

When creating a new, blank message, the default account will be used. You
can change this using the "Accounts" button on the toolbar. From there, you
can choose the account you wish the message to be sent from.

When replying to, or forwarding, an e-mail, whatever account received the
message will be set as the account for the reply or forward. Again, you can
change this from the Accounts button in the message window.

I have three. Hotmail. google mail and my ISP's SBC. account. To clarify,
I want to be able to send from each as I wish and not have one sending all
the time.

No matter which of my account in boxes I'm in, everything wants to get sent
from my Hotmail account unless I'm replying to a post. I've tried opening a
new message form, going to send receive and selecting one of my other
accounts without success. Any input would be appreciated.
