At the command prompt, you can type
chkdsk /?
and you will get a screen full of the options with a brief description. It looks to me that possibly the slash F or the slash r options might be what you need. Possibly
slash F should be tried first in case that fixes everything.
The format would be something like
chkdsk a: /f
where the letter a represents the drive letter.
If this data is in a word document, it may be difficult to get everything reassembled. You could end up with a lot of files with mnumeric names that you will have to
piece together or examine with a text editor. It would be great if Slash F works, but I am not real hopeful from what you have said.
If this data is vital data, there are sometimes computer repair services that specialize in data recovery. Before you do anything at all, you might want to check locally
to see what it would cost to see if your data could be recovered. If you try something yourself, you could make it more difficult to salvage the data. Only you can
really make the call. It's a balance between cost, time, and the importance of the data.
