Hi Jessica and all --
I read the messages in this thread and have wondered the following:
You say they installed a new version of xp and removed the old one -- does
that translate to reformatting the disk and blowing away your data (which
was hopefully backed up)? or does it mean they reinstalled the OS over the
previous version and left some debris (or files with unknown types on the
disk?
Honestly I don't know if it is possible to do the latter, but in case the
tech person did something that might have resulted in something being left
around, I would recommend reinstalling from scratch -- with a reformat to
blow away the files.
The scenario I am wondering about is if your antivirus had junk embedded in
some system folder and then the new version of windows had a different
anti-virus package and so some of the old files would be of an unknown type.
Now, as to the suggestion that the techy would do this monumental operation
without giving you the software installation cds, that would be really--i
mean extremely tacky service.
He should have given you the cd with the installation files and also a set
of recovery cds.
The recovery cds is what you want if you really want a clean installation.
I had a horror story with a laptop as well -- too long to tell, but it
started with the discovery that they had enclosed the wrong OS cds for my
model laptop in the package it came in, so when I repaired the operating
system, I had all the wrong drivers so some of my devices didn't
work--including the internet adaptor. It took a couple weeks and a lot of
money to get it resolved.
Anyway, hope you get your problem resolved. Let us know how it turns out.

NatureHello
My laptop was purchased gfor me from a family member as a Christmas gift
last year. 3 months after I got it it crashed because of a virus and I took
it to a repair shop where they claimed to have fixed it by installing a new
version of windows x p and deleting my old one. They put all my drivers in
like they were when I first got the machine. Things worked fine until about
a week ago. My computer at odd times will display a windows XP 24 Error.
Your system has unrecognizable file types on windows. Please insert the XP
cd and run the repair feature. I no longer know where the man is who fixed
it because he moved and I am now in New York at school. Does anyone have
any suggestions? When I call Dell everyday for help with this they just say
that If I send it back they will not fix it unless it is something
physically wrong such as the screen cracking or one of the drives not
popping out right.
Jess
