[gui-talk] clicable Web text (was Internet explorer 6 and jfw)

Hi Joel.
I have seen this phenomenon a few times - it is common in the rendering
of some css style sheet formats used in web design from what I can
gather though I must pretense these comments by stating that I am not a
web design specialist by any stretch of the imagination.
In my day job of course I do computer support (hardware support,
software support, and some network support), however; outside of that
day job I also do some consulting work to earn a few extra dollars.
One such case was for an elearning company called Blue Drop Inc who
design elearning modules.
In the cases where I saw the phenomenon described by Denise there were
objects on the page which jaws was reporting as clickable however jaws
wouldn't report the objects as links when I tabbed over them, however;
using my virtual cursor along with the up and down arrows I could
explore the page and when I came to any such object pressing enter would
activate one.
Turns out this method was used to present a quiz.
When you clicked on one of these mystery links if I can call them those
within the multiple quiz a part of the web page which was hidden to jaws
and visually on the page would become visible to provide the test taker
feedback on whether he/she answered the question correctly.
My role was simply to review their prototype and recommend
accessibility best practises, etc, needless to say the format referenced
above got lots of feedback and a bit of a re-design too.
Cheers, Ed.

I only encountered this sort of thing once, and that was on a friend's
Live Journal page. As I arrowed down the page, I'd come to active
links that were normal links, and announced themselves as such to Jaws,
saying "link" as I came to them., but then, nearly every line, there
would be a word or phrase that would have Jaws announcing "Clickable
link," or whatever it said.

Naturally, I tried hitting enter on some of them to see if they
responded as ordinary active links would. Nothing happened. It never
occurred to me, by the way, to play with the Jaws cursor or the num pad
mouse buttons, because, well, something just seemed odd, and if they
wouldn't react to hitting enter, my hunch was that they weren't real
links, anyway.

This was confirmed by my friend, a sighted woman, who looked over my
shoulder one day as I traversed her Live Journal page with Jaws, and
listened with me to what Jaws was reporting as I went. It would say
"clicable" or "clicable link" or whatever constantly, and in every case,
my friend said that these words and phrases weren't in fact, links of
any sort, and that they didn't have any visible signs of being links of
any sort, and that they were just ordinary text and she had no idea what
was up with that. But from the horses' mouth, describing her own Web
page, I learned that there had to be some sort of coding error that set
Jaws off as it did.

Sometime after that, she used her Live Journal options to change the
appearance of her page in several ways, and in the course of things,
that phenomenon simply disappeared, albeit without any of the text
formerly implicated being deleted.

So, I'm not technically savvy enough to know what that was about, but in
the one case I can describe here, it was meaningless in terms of
functionality.

You could probably click on it by routing the jaws cursor to the pc
cursor and then use your left and right mouse buttons.

Cheers, Ed.

Hello all,
I was wondering what the word clickable means when one lands on an item
on a
web page. There is no link or button. So Is there any way to clik on
this
using jfw?
