[gui-talk] CDEX vs CD Extractor Discussion

Hi Ed,

First, thanks for sharing your memory that CDex was usually referred to by
its full name, originally. I couldn't have known that, as I didn't learn
about the program until a couple of years ago.

Perhaps Easy CD/DA Extractor, being a full-functioned program that not only
can rip but also copy CDs , burn CDs and convert files (for instance, from
.mp3 to .wma and so forth(, seems like too much for Denise, but these all
are capabilities that are regularly used by many or most people who are into
this stuff, as I am. But of course there's no need for her to get it if she
doesn't expect to do any of those other things for a while. A point in
favor of the program is, as you must've noticed, it's only about $25 to
become a registered user, and this for a program that's easily the equal, I
think, of several others you hear mentioned a lot that cost twice to four
times as much.

Last, I never reviewed the Poikasoft site to see what you noticed about the
support, but in actuality, I've received free and very articulate English
support several times via email from the developer himself, who like many
sophisticated and educated Scandinavians (he's Finnish) is very fluent in
English.

In any case, I agree that if all Denise wants to do is rip CDs to .mp3 for
the moment, CDex remains entirely free of cost and very possible to master
using a screen reader, and produces perfectly good results. I have provided
her the subscribe address of the pc-audio mailing list so that she can go
there and ask all the basic questions about ripping and how to make the best
settings in the options menu of CDex, which can be a bit overwhelming for a
newbie, even if they'd settle for the very simplest configuration.

Best,
Joel

Subject: [gui-talk] CDEX vs CD Extractor Discussion

Hi Joel, Denise, and anyone else following this discussion.
Here's the answer to your question.
The original versions of CDEX were actually called CD Extractor if memory
serves correctly, I'm thinking this was around 1998 or 1999, I just remember
that it while I was in university at the time and that's when I started
using the program.
Also, I checked out the web site you sent and found that 1 that you had to
purchase the other program, 2 it had way more features than Denise needed,
and 3 based upon what I saw on the web site I would not recommend the
program you suggested for simple conversion of audio tracks to mp3 format.
The reason I would not recommend it, number 3 above is simply because while
they will sell their program to English-speaking users it is evident that
their customer support and customer service portal is only available in a
foreign language, either Finnish or Sweedish.
I hope this is helpful, Ed.

>I don't get it. She said "CD Extractor." Now, I have CDex, too.
But how
>did you infer that she meant CDex? I surely didn't. I see the
word
>"extractor," and I assume she must be misnaming the only such
program I know
>with the word "extractor" in its name.

>oh, well. I did mention CDex to her, too.
>CD/
