[gui-talk] Printer recommendations?

Andy,

Whoops. Didn't anyone read you the instructions or tell you that this is
similar to what can happen to the rubber rollers in the tape transport of a
cassette deck? If I'd retired my HP 520 the firwst time I experienced what
you describe, it wouldn't have lasted three years! You're supposed to rub
each roller, all the way around, with the kind of alcohol that's used for
this purpose-- isopropyl alcohol, I think--, which will clean off the dark
gunk from the surface that causes it to become slick (I used to be able to
see this on the folded paper towel I used for the purpose) and leave the
roller with its old texture again for grabbing the paper.

Oh, well.

Actually, what caused the demise of my HP 520 was that the rubber on the
pinch rollers wore smooth, so they couldn't feed the paper through. The
printer would act like there was no paper in the tray. I had heard from
others who had the same problem, and was told it was time to retire that
printer. As for the printing, if you could get paper to it, it would
print, but it didn't last anywhere near 12 years. I think it's neat
that your 520 served you well for so long.
Andy
