[gui-talk] Printer recommendations?

Steve,

No, just like Andy and others who've responded, you're telling me a couple
of things I happen to know already and a few things I didn't yet know, plus
you're giving me the benefit of your own experiences. So, thanks a lot. As
I said to Andy, I don't print constantly, every day, as some users might. I
do a lot by email, including sending Word files to recipients I'd otherwise
print out for. But hard copy is needed sometime, and I want the printing to
be sharp, and I don't want the cartridge to dry out. Also, I've had plenty
of hassles with my trusty old HP 520 inkjet printing out a few pages of huge
font, I mean enormous, and garbage characters, too, and this is no good.
Need more reliability. I can just sort of see whether or not a page is
printed, but I can't see the individual characters or spot the kinds of
glitches that look ridiculous to any person who is reading the material.
Joel

Joel,

I don't suppose I am telling you anything new, but if you only do
black-and-white, an inexpensive laser printer is definitly worth
considering. While the replacement
cartridges are more expensive, they generally print many more pages and are
less likely to dry up from lack of use as can happen with the inkjet
cartridges. Also, in
some cases, not buying the manufacturers cartridges can void your warranty,
although that is probably not usually an issue.

It's funny you should bring this up because I have had an Okidata laser
printer for twelve years now, actually they call it an LED printer I guess,
and am thinking of
replacing it. During the entire twelve years, I have used only two
cartridges, but you probably print more than I do. I have used an HP-1300
here at work and that is
a very nice printer, but I think one could get by cheaper if one looks for a
laser printer to use at home.

My kids use a color ink-jet printer on their computer, and I was not real
happy with the HP inkjet or the Epson we had. The HP seemed to have a
glitchy driver that
would cause garbage to print from time to time and we never figured out why.
The Epson was very cheap but it broke down just after the warranty ended
although it
performed well while it lasted, but it only cost me $60. Still, I am
probably going to look for a cheap laserprinter to replace my Okidata just
because the cartridges last
longer and are less subject to clogging, as I have already said, and I don't
have to worry as much about the ink drying after printing. A lot of your
decision will
depend upon whether you print on a regular basis and what the volume of your
printing is. I'm also not sure what the availability of black only ink-jets
are now. I'd be
curious as to what you buy since your printing needs sound similar to mine.
