[gui-talk] Printer recommendations?

Hi Andy,

As you may remember from my inquiry that starts this thread, I've got an
ancient HP 520 that's finally creaking and clacking like a broken car and
just having a lot of trouble with everything. So I'm starting from the same
place you were when you looked for a replacement.

Just Like you, I don't print major documents very often, in my case because
I do so much by email, including a lot of work with editors who oversee
publication of the occasional stories I have in newspapers and magazines,
but for sending a manuscript to nearly any other journal requires hard copy
and snail mail, and I don't relish the thought of the printing getting
spotty without my knowing it. I'm still partial, but I can no longer see
the details, but I remember very well how bad it would look to send out
something printed badly like that. A disaster. And given a reasonably good
dpi level, laser printing is almost always crisper and sharper than inkjet.

So, this is one model I'll go to Amazon and see prices and read reviews
about.

Thanks,
Joel

I recently bought an HP Laserjet 1020 from COMP USA for $129.
installation was easy and it works like a charm. It is a monochrome
unit, and prints at 600 DPI. The 1022 costs a few dollars more, but
prints at 1200 DPI. I like the idea that the paper is lying down, like
it did with my old Deskjet 520. At work, I have a Lexmark unit. The
paper stands up, and is very difficult to lload, and sometimes jams as
it is coming through after printing. I got tired of ink jets because I
do not print that often, but when I do, it's something important, and I
got tired of being informed that I had to change a hardly used cartridge
because it had dried out. Laser cartridges are more expensive, but they
last a lot longer. I have had this lexmark E-323 at work for almost 3
years, and I'm still on the same cartridge.

Andy
