[gui-talk] Spam filter for Outlook Express

Hi sherry,
I have to laugh, ruefully, at your saying that. Not long ago I needed to
respond to someone who emailed me about something important, someone with
whom I'd never before corresponded. And When I tried to reply to her, her
Earthlink security function demanded that I perform a one-time registration
in order to reassure the system that I was a person and not a bot
distributing spam. And yes, this function worked with a graphical code
thing, I forget the formal name for this method though I'm sure we all know
the drill, and there was a notice that if I couldn't see the code in order
to type it into the edit box, I should contact tech support and they'd help
me get through.
Well, I went through a lot of silly crap trying to do this, first talking to
some offshore call center person in Delhi or Bangalor who had no idea what
the problem was, then emailing someone who didn't respond, and so forth,
until I gave up and just sent one more note hoping the person would see it
and relent on the filter thing. Put me on her permitted list,.
Naturally, Earthlink informed me that this email wasn't going to be
delivered, either, but now I realize that, just as I guessed, it went to a
holding tank like mine where the person could find it if they looked. And
so she did, and put me on her okay list, and all's well. But boy, that was
not much fun.

My ISP, Earthlink does a great job of blocking spam.

Hi,
Are you people discussing this issue in terms of not having an ISP with its
own spam filters at the mail server that you can adjust for sensitivity?
Because both my last ISP and my present one provided this feature, and my
current ISP manages to block zillions of spam emails every day although it
lets through a handful, which doesn't upset me in the least when I go to my
spam-holding page online and see how many have been held back. Just
wondering.

You can also slide the filter level on Norton's antispam program to
eliminate even more spam but you'll get more wrong hits.

| The spam filter that I've found most helpful in recent years is Norton's
| Antispam program, which comes bundled with Norton Antivirus or Norton
| Internet Security. Its fairly accessible. Though it doesn't catch all the
| spam, it does catch 95% or so of it. Even if you find messages you want to
| identify as spam or ones you don't want identified as spam, you can use
the
| application key to bring up the usual context menu where there will be a
| "Norton Antispam" submenu with choices such as this is spam, this is not
| spam, empty the spam folder, and settings. As long as you keep the
| definitions updated and browse the spam folder regularly to make sure
| nothing legit is being identified as spam, this programs should serve you
| well. I don't know how much it cost by itself, but as I said before, you
can
| get it bundled with the antivirus or internet security packages. pretty
good
| deal I'd say.

| Hello all,
|
| The number of spam messages that I get have increased exponentially during
| the past few days. Are there any reliable spam filters for Outlook
Express?
| If yes, are they sufficiently accessible?
|
| Thanks,
| Geetha
