  Colleagues

The launch ceremony for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2008 will be held shortly. It will take place in Cairo, today 15 May, during Telecomm Africa, 1:30 to 3:00 early afternoon Cairo time. I think that's 10:30 to 12:00 UTC.

The theme for WTISD-2008 is 'Connecting people with disabilities'. You can get more information, including following the link to the webcast, from
  http://www.itu.int/wtisd/2008/award/index.html

You can get more information about the ITU and telecommunication/ICT for people with disabilities at
  http://www.itu.int/themes/accessibility/
and for the more technically minded at
  http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/studygroups/com16/accessibility/index.html

Since the conclusion of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in November 2005, the World Day has been marked by a high-profile ceremony that includes the presentation of the ITU World Telecommunication and Information Society Award to distinguished laureates for their contribution towards building an inclusive and more equitable Information Society. This year, the awards will focus on eminent personalities for their work in providing ICT opportunities for persons with disabilities, the theme of this year's celebrations.

I think that many of you will find the webcast of the ceremony interesting, especially to hear the announcement of this year's laureates and here their addresses.

  Enjoy!

  Cheers
  Bill
