[Dtb-talk] Victor Reader Stream

I haven't bought my own Stream yet, but have done extensive testing with one
of the units we purchased for my office, the Washington Talking Book &
Braille Library. So far, I've found it very easy to use, and have not found
the file transfer nearly as complicated as others seem to believe it to be.
Generally, I download the zip file for a book from NLS, create a folder on
my Bookshelf on the Stream's SD card, and then when I go to unzip the NLS
file, I just tell 7-Zip to unzip it to the folder I've created on the SD
card, and I'm done in a very short time. In my personal opinion, it's no
harder than, say, installing a set of JAWS scripts that are downloaded as a
Zip file, or updating Rockbox on my iPod.

I will agree; the update process for updating the Stream's firmware is a bit
odd.

The only feature it's lacking which I'd like to see added someday is the
ability to read Web Braille books in addition to DAISY and plain text
files...But, that's one of the reasons I have a PACMate, so it's not too big
a deal. :)

Like most devices, it depends on what you want to do with it. I mostly read
NLS and RFB&D books, and for that it is wonderful. I have also read
bookshare.org books with it and it is good for that too. The TTS voice
isn't my favorite, but ok. I also reco4rd the voices of my kids, and am
archiving them to save like people do pictures.

I think it is an absolute wonderful device -- my favorite technology of all
times. I commute 3.5 hours a day, plus more reading, so probably use it 5
or 6 hours a day and love it.
