In her post today Robin Rousu mentions the audiobook download service that
is available from many public libraries in the US. Did you know this same
service is available to anyone registered for talking book service in
California, Texas, Colorado, Oregon, Massachusetts, Delaware, and New
Hampshire? The service is called Unabridged, and it offers a collection of
nearly 3,000 commercial audiobooks for download in the Windows Media format.
The Unabridged website (unlike the public library websites) has been
specially designed to work well with screen readers. As Robin says, the
service is not iPod and Mac compatible, but the good news is that most low
cost MP3 players work great with the service. If your regional library for
the blind does not offer Unabridged service, ask them to consider it. The
cost to participate is very reasonable. Check out the Unabridged website:
