Here is something that Stream owners may be interested in. It is a
very
small active mini speaker cube. It measures roughly 1 inch square
but not
exactly. It is maybe a quarter of an inch wider than it is wide
but for all
practical purposes you could call it a cube. It has the 3.5MM plug
built
into the cube so you just turn it on and plug it directly into your
device's
headphone jack. It has a rechargeable lithium battery that you
recharge via
a usb port or a AC adapter with a mini usb plug on one end. It
takes 1 hour
to recharge fully. It comes with a keychain style plug that you
attach to
the cube and then insert into a usb port for charging. It does not
come
with an AC adapter. It also comes with a short extension cable
that has a
3.5mm male plug on one end and a 3.5mm female jack on the other.
This is
provided in case you don't want to plug the cube directly into your
device
or can't for whatever reason.
I ordered one of these and just received it yesterday and it is
perfect for
spoken word material. This definitely is not for music. Having
said that,
it is perfect for my BookPort that has no built-in speaker and it
may be a
solution as well for those Stream owners that just want a louder
speaker for
listening to audio books without having to cart around a set of
external
speakers. It was well worth the price.
The speaker sells for $4.76! No, that was not a typo and that
includes
shipping from Hong Kong. You will have to wait a couple of weeks
to get it,
maybe less. Here is the link for anyone interested.

I was very leery but decided to take the chance because of the low
price. I
have to say I am very pleased with it as long as you know what to
expect.
The speaker goes very loud without distortion and I can actually
put me
device on the kitchen counter and walk all over the room doing
things and
hear my book with no trouble at all. It sounds kind of like a very
well
built speaker phone on a cordless handset, so please don't go
looking for
miracles, but it does a fine job with books and for the price, it's
a real
deal if you have the need.

Yes I think the volume definitely is an issue, especially since so
many people who are blind also have hearing impairments for
whatever
crazy reason. My volume seems to fluctuate, sometimes it is louder
than others.
