I'm going to rant a bit here in hopes that someone at NLS will hear
me. I have tried on several occasions to get some answers as to just
what the NLS player will and will not read. As the author of a
production tools this is kind of important to me. As an end user it
is important to me. I have never received a reply to any of my
queries and I'm a member of the Daisy Consortium. I've offered to
test the player as someone resonably well versed in the DAISY
standard and have never received a reply.
The whole process seems to be a black box in which we will not know
what were getting until we get it. No one seems to be able, or
willing, to answer any of the many questions about this here are
just a few:
What types of DAISY books with this player play (DAISY 2.02, DAIS/
NISO 2002, DAISY/NISO 2005)
Will the player play non-encrypted books from other vendors? Such as
books produced by my dtbmaker program?
Will the play be able to play books from RFB&D?
Will there be a means of playing books not on a NLS cartridge from
say a USB pen drive?
Will the player be able to playback books produced by other
international producers of DAISY book such as the RNIb or TPB in
Sweden? If not doesn't this defeat the whole idea of DAISY as an
international standard?
If there is ANYONE at the NLS who can answer my questions and tell
me if books produced by my dtbmaker program will play I would dearly
like to hear from them.
