[Dtb-talk] NLS Digital Talking Book Cartridge and Player

Hello David and others,
A little correction from my previous post. The following from my previous
message is a misstatement "All playback devices that currently support DAISY
will allow you to create/record DAISY material playback in them." I meant
to say that all playback devices that support DAISY will allow the playback
of unincripted standard DAISY files in them.
I appologize if this caused any confusion.

David,
As you know, the DAISY specification is open and you are free to use it to
publish your material. All playback devices that currently support DAISY
will allow you to create/record DAISY material playback in them, provided
that you do not use a proprietary incription system. The DAISY consortium
is developing a DRM system that all major manufacturers have promised to
support once the specifications are finalized. You will be able to use this
DRM system for your material as a publisher and expect that DAISY players
will play your files in the future.
Hope this hhelps.

I was certainly aware of the DAISY standardization -- was just wondering
about the V3 situation for the actual DTB creation work. But as I am now
interpreting your (Mike) comments, my question about v3 or v2 may be a mute
point since the data placed on the NLS cartridge is apparently a generation
removed from that data-state.
I would not expect PC DTD readers to interpret the same encrypted data set,
but rather wondered if the basic, unencrypted DAISY DTB files (XML and audio
files) might be available from some central NLS archive for use in generic
readers. Probably not, I would guess.
The reason I'm asking these questions is because, as a publisher, I'm
interested in knowing if I can reasonably expect to distribute books
independently in this format. I know I can do it for PC DTB readers by
assembling DAISY DTB file bundles - and am wondering about whether
publications produced for the new NLS device will only be manufactured from
the NLS system.
My apologies if I'm addressing any items that have been previously covered
on this list.

As has been posted several times here over the past week or so, the
Daisy spec is standard -- V3, I think. But the encryption scheme for the
audio is special to NLS so one's standard software player won't handle
NLS books without modification -- modification which NLS is not going to
undertake.
