[Dtb-talk] magazine delivery

Hello Bret and listers,

There is all ready an automated system for delivering magazines in text or
audio formats. It's called a podcast. Those wishing to receive it must
install special software which allows them to receive files as text or audio
deliveries. Two different types of aggregators are used to access podcast
feeds. RSS Readers are used for reading podcasts in a textual form and
aggregators are used for accessing podcasts in an audio or video format.
These, "Aggregators" are also called podcatchers. We use the WebbIE Suite of
Web access programs that includes both an RSS Reader and a Podcatcher. Many
podcatchers download the podcasts to your system and save them temporarily
until you view, or hear them, and save them permanently. Others such as the
WebbIE Podcatcher allow you to stream the podcast feeds prior to your
downloading them allowing you to keep valuable real estate on your hard
drive available for other data and programs. Perhaps a,"Podcatcher" could be
developed that would incorporate the features of a normal podcast aggregator
with those of E-Clips Water to permit DTBS to be delivered to subscribers in
this way. When someone receives a DTB Podcast and they want to read it they
would need to download it to their hard drive, and unpack the book. The DTB
Podcatcher could include these functions to permit these operations to be
done within a single program. This is just my take on automatic delivery of
DTBS.

I would rather receive an automated notification of the magazine's
availability as this would keep inboxes from becoming overfilled. Some
would have difficulty receiving a file which is more than 10 meg or so
without special operator intervention. Automated delivery might create
too many errors for the sending servers to deal with and create more
work for human intervention than budgets would allow.

Perhaps in time a fully automated delivery system will evolve, but let's
get to square one before we try to jump to square 5.
