Erin came to the Colorado Center for the Blind in 2009 without a white
cane. Before training, she felt her prospects were limited and, as her
eyesight faded, her world was getting smaller. She'd finished college, but
she wasn't finding a job. She realized that employers weren't going to hire
her because they sensed her lack of confidence.

"I wouldn't have hired me, either," says Erin now.

Training at the Colorado Center for the Blind changed that. Yes, the cane
skills mattered. Yes, the technology skills mattered, as did Braille and
cooking skills. But the real change was Erin's belief in herself and pride
in being an independent blind person. She graduated in 2010 and worked that
summer in our youth program. In less than a year she had her first job in
the insurance industry. Now Erin is a senior Underwriter for Commercial
Property Casualty for a major insurance company.

And the woman travels. I mean, she travels! Always with her white cane in
hand!

Without her training at CCB, Erin says, "I would not have been to 34
countries. I would not be following the career I'm in, and I would not have
had the life-changing experiences I've had! It's no coincidence that people
come through the Center and then go on to do great things!"

We believe that blind people can do anything. Erin believes in herself and
gives back to a community of positive blind people in the National
Federation of the Blind, as well. And she knows that her belief can take
her anywhere-- even to the Great Wall of China!
