Dear Federation friends (And enemies alike):

If you have spent any time at all in the Federation, you know that one of our major goals is to raise money. We do it for the Colorado Center for the blind. We do it for our local and state chapters and affiliates. We do it for the national office. We do it to help all of our blind brethren live the lives they want. We do it, even though most of us dislike fundraising, because we know deep in our hearts, it's necessary.

We of the Denver chapter thought it would be nice to reverse the trend. Rather than raise money, we want to help you to lose some of it. And what better place to lose money than at a gambling casino?

To that end, we have set up a trip to Black Hawk on Saturday, September 16. We will be departing from the CCB in Littleton at approximately 12:15 PM, or 15 minutes after the adjournment of our monthly chapter meeting; whichever comes first. We will be loading vans and traveling to Blackhawk, where we will park at the historic Golden Gulch casino. We will be leaving to return to the CCB at 4:30 PM. The cost for this venture will be $15 per person, per seat. All proceeds go directly to the Denver chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado.

We chose the Golden Gulch casino for several special reasons. One is that they operate old-fashion, coin-operated slot machines. Modern slot machines are not particularly blind friendly. You swipe a card and press a button and nothing really happens. But with these machines, you can feel the tangible, hedonistic pleasure of dropping a coin into the machine, pulling the long bandit arm and listening to the machine do it's thing. Moreover, this casino was once the city jail. If you really feel guilty about spending your hard-earned money on the slots, rather than donating it to the Parents' Division or something, you can go down into the basement where they have several jail cells. There, you can feel the emotional satisfaction of expiating your guilt, and still play slots. That is the best of both worlds! Plus, I hear they have a pretty good hotdog at their snack bar. They do not have a full-service restaurant.

Of course, you are paying for the ride to and from Black Hawk. Once there, you are free to visit any other casino you wish, as long as you are back at the meeting point by the designated time of departure.

If you would like to go, please send me your name privately and I will add it to the list. Please be advised that you must have your $15 in hand to give to our treasurer at the next chapter meeting on September 16, or you may not bored the van.

Do not try to sneak on board the van without paying. President Burke and Treasurer Yeng Will catch you. They have their ways. Worse, you might encounter them in one of their darker moods. If so, they might let you sneak on and go up to Black Hawk. You will be quietly celebrating the idea that you got away with something, and then they'll bust you for not paying and you can see if you could hitchhike back to Denver.

Hurry, hurry, hurry!!! Seats are filling up fast and we only have a limited amount of space, so get your names to me privately as soon as possible. Once the seats are gone, they're gone.

Please be aware that we will leave directly from the CCB and return directly to the CCB. We will not be making any personal pickups or drop-offs, so please make your own transportation arrangements accordingly. No cats allowed. Our compassion has it's limits.

We hope to see many of you on September 16.

Finally, let me quote that great literary figure, Blue Duck, from that American epic, Lonesome Dove.

"Let's gamble!"

Yours in Federationism:
