Colorado Commission for Individuals who are Blind and Visually Impaired




Administrator Selected

June 15, 2009

 

The Colorado Department of Human Services is pleased to announce the selection and appointment of Mr. Scott Selby as the Administrator of the Colorado Commission for Individuals who are Blind and Visually Impaired.  Mr. Selby will begin his service on July 6, 2009.

 

The Colorado Commission for Individuals who are Blind and Visually Impaired was created, by the General Assembly, during the 2007 Legislative Session based upon a bill sponsored by Representative Joe Rice.  The Commission is a multi-disciplinary fifteen member Governor appointed body.  The Commission currently has an annual budget of  $ 112,067 and one staff person.

 

Mr. Selby was selected following a rigorous and competitive process that included: written and oral exam (s), an interview with the members of the Commission, and a final interview with senior management staff of the Department.   Members of the CCIBVI worked with the CDHS, throughout the selection process.  

 

Mr. Selby, who was born legally-blind, is a native of rural Eastern Oklahoma and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Oklahoma Baptist University and is in the process of completing his Master's Degree in Health Care Administration.

 

Mr. Selby has a diverse professional background including just under 11 years of work in one of the largest community-based non-profit organizations in Oklahoma. In his tenure there he supervised the daily and long-term operations of an array of programming that included residential treatment facilities for children and adults, family preservation programs, mental health and substance abuse treatment programs, vocational training programs, independent living programs, and a variety of other community-based educational and prevention efforts.

 

Following his work in Oklahoma, Mr. Selby worked for two years in the state of Alaska as Director of a mental health center on Kodiak Island, a large island located off the southern coast of Alaska. 



 

The Center served numerous communities and villages that were accessible only by water or air as well as working closely with the US Coast Guard whose largest base in the US is located on the island.    In addition, he has been a private business owner, co-founding an organization that provided mental health services to individuals residing in long-term care facilities. 

 

Mr. Selby has extensive experience in working with policy and advocacy groups focusing on issues related to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities. These activities have included working closely with legislators and state and local governments.

 

Scott has two children ages 9 and 5 and enjoys all of the outdoor activities Colorado has to offer including hiking, fishing, and skiing. 

 

The Colorado Department of Human Services and the Colorado Commission for Individuals who are Blind and Visually Impaired join in welcoming our new Administrator and in pledging our support in his new role.
