August 28, 2007
Dear Friends:
It is with great excitement that I remind you of and invite you to the 53rd
Annual Convention of the National <http://www.nfbco.org/> Federation of the
Blind of Colorado taking place Thursday, October 4 through Sunday, October 7
at the DoubleTree
<http://www.doubletree.com/en/dt/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=RLDV-DT> Hotel
Denver, located at 3203 Quebec Street.
This year's theme is Making a Difference, Changing Lives! and the Convention
agenda is designed to do exactly that.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 4
The kick-off event for this year's Convention will be the Third Annual
Possibilities Fair. This fair is designed primarily for blind and visually
impaired seniors, their families and friends, and the professionals who
serve them. Unfortunately, many blind and visually impaired seniors believe
that if blindness comes during the later years, life's major activities must
come to an end. We know differently and we want to share that knowledge.
The Possibilities Fair brings home, in a variety of ways, the point that
with the right skills, resources, and attitudes, life as a blind senior can
be full and enriching. The registration fee, which includes lunch, is only
$10.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5
Another exciting feature at this year's Convention-an exclusive early
morning session for all exhibitors-will be held on Friday morning from 8:00
a.m. to 10:00 a.m. This exclusive session will give convention attendees an
opportunity to check out the latest technology, products, and services for
the blind and visually impaired before the start of Friday's General Session
and other activities.
Starting promptly at 10:00 a.m. the gavel falls on the first General
Session. We will hear from rehabilitation and education officials and
scholars about the status of programs designed to improve the quality of
work, education, and life for blind Coloradans.
At the noon luncheon we will hear from high ranking Colorado politicians and
community leaders.
At 2:00 p.m., we welcome for the first time at a NFBCO state convention,
Coach <http://www.excellentandexceptional.com/> Joe Gilliam. Coach Joe, as
he is known, is a nationally recognized motivational and inspirational
speaker. He will get you to think about your life in a different way, a way
calculated to bring improvement and enrichment to your life.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. we invite you to join us for cocktails and hors
d'oeuvre where we will spotlight the Convention sponsors.
The Resolutions Committee will meet Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. as will
other break out sessions.
After the Resolutions Committee ends we invite to join NFB of Denver chapter
members at the hospitality mixer, sponsored by the Convention host, the NFB
of Denver Chapter <http://www.nfbdenver.org/> . NFB of Denver Chapter
President, Brent Batron, says the theme of the hospitality evening will be
the old West. There will be fun for all ages with music, a costume contest,
card games and games of chance as well as children's activities. A cash bar
will also be available.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 6
The General Session resumes at 9:00 a.m. when we will hear the NFB of
Colorado's Presidential Report; an update from the NFB national office
presented by our national representative, Mr. Mark
<http://www.nfb.org/nfb/Jernigan_Institute.asp?SnID=713320993> Riccobono,
Executive Director of the Jernigan Institute; a report from our Colorado
Center for the Blind; and more.
At noon on Saturday we will hold another luncheon, featuring the
NFB-NEWSLINER program and the Colorado Talking Book Library.
On Saturday afternoon we continue with a variety of break out sessions
including parents of blind children, blind students, a technology seminar, a
senior division meeting, and more.
At 6:00 in the evening we will gather for the pre-banquet social hour prior
to the Annual Banquet which begins at 7:00 p.m. This year's banquet address
will be delivered by national representative, Marc Riccobono. We will also
present awards; bestow this year's scholarships, and much more. The banquet
is followed by live entertainment from Stray Dog, an Americana style band,
lead by NFBCO's very own board member, Eric Woods. You will also have a
chance to bid on some great auction items while you enjoy the music. This
fundraising event is sure to be big on fun.
SUNDAY OCTOBER 7
At 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning at the last General Session, we will hold the
"My Blindness, Myself" panel to hear from a few of our own members about
their lives as blind persons and the way the NFB has influenced them.
Finally, we will address convention business such as resolutions, financial
reports, and elections.
