Clarence Huggins,
One idea I proposed a few weeks ago was to make the tactile Braille
American flag available to all blind veterans, and other blind Americans.
This flag was created as a tribute to a blind WWII veteran and now stands
as a tribute to all blind Americans, and blind veterans from all wars,
whether service connected blindness or if the loss of sight occured later
in life.
The tactile Braille American flag is available in either full color or non
color. It is color coded in Braille so that those who are blind can see
the colors, as well as the red and white stripes, and the fifty white
stars on the blue field of the American flag. The flag also bears the
American Pledge of Allegiance in both large print and Braille, grade one
or two.
The Braille flag has been authorized for installment at the Arlington
National Cemetery, and is expected to be placed there later this Spring.
The bronze replica of the Braille flag was a created by the Kansas Braille
Transcription Institute of Wichita, Kansas. The Truxes Company in
Illinois is donating the bronze replica. Mr. John Truxes was a WWII
Veteran and POW in Germany. Sgt. Kevin West who recently returned from
Iraq was responsible for generating the computer drawing for the flag to
be cast in bronze.
The Braille flag has been presented to many blind veterans from all wars,
most recently to several blinded in Iraq and Afghanistan. To learn more
about the Braille American flag visit: www.kbti.org.
The Kansas Braille Transcription Institute is prepared to work in
conjunction with all veterans groups in helping to make this flag
available to all blind veterans, and other blind Americans.

> My name is Frank Scarcella I am a blind veteran who recently joined the
> NAB
> organization, I live in San Diego, Calif. And I go to the VA Hospital for
> medical treatment. Here in San Diego the blind veteran is under the
> jurisdiction of Social Service department, which does not apply in other
> VA
> Hospitals because Blind veterans are under the jurisdiction of the [PMR]
> Physical Medicine Rehabilitation department. Under the roof of Physical
> Medicine the blind veteran is being taken care of by medical doctors not
> Social Service personnel. There are other options available, like
> Recreational Therapy, or psychiatry just to mention a couple. Under
> Social
> Services it is out of the question because the help just mentioned has to

> other disabled veterans are under Physical Medical Rehabilitation
> Department. A look into this matter will be greatly appreciated by all
