Class Title: Services Specialist for the Blind 1/Orientation Teacher

Hours worked (shifts, rotations, travel): 8:00 a.J.-5:00 p.J., with 
some travel and 24-hour availability during program sessions

Name and job classification of the immediate supervisor: Sandra 
Tigges, Program Administrator

Basic Purpose Of Position: To teach transition-age blind youth the 
alternative techniques of blindness and help them develop a positive 
attitude about blindness, while they are participating in the IDB's 
summer youth programs.

Description of Work:
TIME/%: 30%
WORK PERFORMED:  Teach transition-age blind youth the alternative 
techniques of blindness in the areas of Home and Personal management, 
Cane Travel, Communications, and other subjects related to summer programming

TIME/%: 20%
WORK PERFORMED:  Chaperone participants during program activities 
both on and off Department premises

TIME/%: 20%
WORK PERFORMED:  Monitor dormitory activities up to 24-hours a day 
while summer programs are in session

TIME/%: 10%
WORK PERFORMED:  Counsel transition-age blind youth and their 
families to help them develop a positive attitude about blindness

TIME/%: 10%
WORK PERFORMED:  Assist Transition specialist in program development 
and planning

TIME/%: 10%
Work Performed:  Evaluate effectiveness of training and provide oral 
and written progress reports on program participants

Essential Functions that must be performed, with or without disabilities:
Ability to learn, develop, and teach the alternative techniques of 
blindness in defined program areas

Ability to learn and implement the Department's philosophy of 
blindness in work duties

Ability to perform a variety of tasks at once

Good judgment

Ability to work effectively with various types of people, especially 
in sensitive situations

Good oral and written communication skills

Good organizational skills

Ability to travel and to be on call twenty-four hours a day

Ability to stand, walk, and hike for extended periods of time

Ability to bend and stoop and to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
