[Blindtlk] FW: [wisconsin] Fw: NY Times article on NewYork's Blind Governor

Hi Again,

I think it is really sad that this governor is in such a high profile
position, with such limited blindness skills. And if he is as blind as
the article says he is, walking briskly and even jogging without some
forma mobility aid, be it a cane or a sighted guide is just plain
foolish! I mean that wholeheartedly. He is an accident waiting to
happen, and then how far is that going to set the rest of us who do have
useable blindness skills back? Someone in such a high profile position
without the skills needed to function safely and independently could do
a lot of damage to the rest of us.

One thing that I have trouble wrapping my mind around is how he can
stand to have people behind him "steering" him, pushing him this way and
that. I have people trying to do this to me as I am using my cane, and
I just want to SLAP them. Few things get under my skin worse than a
sighted person who wants to push or drag me. This is especially true of
sighted folks that I don't know from Adam.

I don't' by any means say that I have the most superb blindness skills,
and I do know many blind folks who could run circles around me in a lot
of areas. But at least I'm not naive enough to think I can get by
without the alternative techniques.

Dave,

Salt being heavier than pepper doesn't tell you how full the shakers
are,
particularly those heavy glass ones you see at some restaurants. There
are other reasons to sprinkle into your hand rather than directly on
your
food to control how much salt and/or pepper you apply to your food.

I continue to wonder if the governor does know how to use a cane and has
simply elected not to so that he doesn't "look blind". People tell me
that I don't look blind when I do use a cane, so.. (I'm still not sure
how one manages to "look" blind or not.)
