So far, I have had not a single problem using JAWS with the Windows 
firewall.  I don't know how you got the dialog saying that JAWS would not 
work if the Windows firewall was on.  Please tell me that you didn't go 
unprotected without any firewall all this time because of that.  IF so, you 
were taking a very big and extremely dangerous risk!!!!!  IF Windows 
firewall blocks a program's access to the internet, you get a dialog which 
allows you to keep blocking or else to permit the program to have internet 
access.  Once you allow, you can always change this in the firewall settings 
off the control panel.  HTH.
