Dear Educators of the Blind and Visually Impaired, parents and other concerned consumers:
I know you are very busy but I am asking you to take a couple of minutes to write a letter of support for the West Virginia Braille Project.
Prison Industries is reclassifying the inmates. As the inmates get reclassified, they are transferred to another prison. This can continue happening on an on-going basis. The problem that the Braille Project is having is making the administration realize how long it takes to learn Braille and not only learn Braille but also textbook formatting, proofreading and tactile graphics. The administration thinks that if an inmate is transferred out, they can train someone else and if they get transferred out in a month or so, they can just train another inmate and continue this cycle. They do realize that this process of learning Braille can take a year or two.
I am including several names and addresses at the bottom of this letter. Please take a minute to write a letter of support for the West Virginia Braille Project, stating how important they are to the education of the blind in West Virginia as well as the United States and Canada. They sell braille books to over 840 agencies throughout the US and Canada. Also, in this letter, please reinforce how long it takes to learn braille, proofreading, textbook formatting and tactile graphics. I dont know the future of OUR braille project if this transferring process continues to occur.
Thanks,
Donna See, Director
