Lemme get this straight... You want a free phone, and no contract, for
less than $35/month. It ain't gonna happen, bud. The two year contract
guarantees that the company makes money on giving you the phone free.
What I'd rather see is a contract-less plan where I provide or pay for my
own phone, but the providers in this country seem to believe that people
like me still deserve a one-year contract.
No, collusion in the industry is designed to prevent what you want, and it
will continue until such time as people refuse to be indentured to
carriers for months and years for the privilege of using their services.
Keep in mind that Metro's plan will be close to $40 once you start paying
it and is very similar to Cricket. You won't get the best phones on those
plans. Accessibility is going to be non-existent. You'll be fine as long
as you stay inside your coverage area, but outside of it your phone is a
paperweight. They don't do roaming.
Of course they offer free long distance. It costs the same for a carrier
to terminate a call pretty much anywhere in the United States, so they
should be happy to do it. The only reason you pay for long distance on
your land line is because telcos are greedy sons-of-somethingorothers who
continue to charge extra for what nowadays costs them essentially nothing.
