You'd have the same "hands-full" problem were you using a guide dog. And a
guide dog still shows that you are blind. So is the problem that you
associate the cane with blind beggars and you don't want to be thought of
like them? While this is certainly understandable, we of the National
Federation of the Blind seek to eradicate this symbolism and , instead, to
inculcate the notion into the public in general and the blind in particular
that the cane is a symbol of independence. And this change in attitude on
the part of the public won't happen unless blind persons use their canes
boldly and well. You have a critical role to play in making that happen.
Carry that cane with pride.

My cane just makes me feel weird. Maybe it would be better when
I can get a guide dog. I don't really know. Sometimes it's also
kind of hard to use my cane when I'm carrying so many books it's
hard to even hold on to it.
