[Blindtlk] FW: FNC Alert

Dewey and listers,

Respectfully, it's not just a matter of worrying about what sighted people
think. Not that that isn't important. But what society thinks has
consequences. The best way I've thought of to describe this is that you
have to think of every accommodation as having a price; nothing is free,
after all. The price of accommodations can come in the form of actual
dollars, or of attitudes, or both. Society is willing to make some
accommodations and sees them as good things. Others it sees as burdensome
and expensive. If we ask for too many of the latter, society will conclude
that blind people are generally undesirable and dangerous because we impose
costs on society that it can't bear. They will believe, as somebody
actually said to me in an email about our Target suit, that the blind take,
take, take and don't give a damn about the costs imposed on businesses,
taxpayers, what have you. (By the way, I'm not saying our Target suit
doesn't have merit; the emailer's anger was misplaced in that situation, but
I do think we have to be mindful of his general point.) Look at the
backlash against many provisions of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
All of this doesn't mean that we shouldn't ask for or accept accommodations;
it means that we need to be judicious about what we ask for. We need to ask
for accessibility where there is no other alternative; we cannot use the
Target Web site unless it is made accessible. We can and do use money
without tactile identification. I used some yesterday and will use more
today. The merchants I dealt with took my money and gave me correct change
without any hesitation, and provided the services I wanted in exchange for
the money. In that sense, which I believe is the most important, I was not
discriminated against. To say that tactile money would be nice is one
thing. To say that not having it is a form of discrimination against the
blind is quite another.

Chris
